The
oldest settlement in High Tatras, situated under the peak Slavkonsky.
It is the administrative centre of High Tatras. There is the seat
of the chief magistrate and the town authorities, the centre of
mountain security services etc.
Hotels and restaurants are very good, as well as the supermarket
and other shops and various services. Stary Smokovec is an important
starting point for shorter or longer tours into the mountains. A
ground cable lift connects Stary Smokovec with attractive skiing
centre named Hrebienok (4183 feet a. s. l.). In close surrounding
are other settlements, better said quarters Novy Smokovec and Horny
Smokovec. The little town is connected by electric railway with
Strbske Pleso, Poprad and Tatranska Lomnica.
Smokovec was founded in 1793, when the owner of local forests Stefan
Czaky built there a gamekeeper's lodge. The settlement grew very
quickly and in 1797 it has been visited as a summer resort. Stefan
Czaky in 1814 started renting the buildings to enterprising hotel-keepers.
In the period 1833 - 1867 under the tenant Jan Juraj Rainer a considerable
development was recorded in Smokovec. Villa Flóra from those times
(1839) is well preserved till today. In 1850 a two-storied tourist
house near the amphitheatre was built. The Rainer family had built
also the Swiss House. The opening of the railway from Kosice to
Bohumín in 1871 facilitated the access to the High Tatras and enhanced
the interest in Stary Smokovec, as well as other High
Tatras villages. In 80's the road was dilated and later it was named
Cesta Slobody (The Road of Freedom).

In Stary Smokovec was built the Spa House and more hotels and villas.
The wooden catholic church (1894), a work of Gedeon Majunke is very
interesting. By this architect also the luxury Klotilda's villa
was projected. In 1904 the Grand Hotel was built, which is dominant
in Stary Smokovec till today. It was built in late 19th century
decorative style according to the project of Guido Hoepfner, an
architect from Budapest.
Stary Smokovec is closely connected with its sources of mineral
water, once considered as magic. At the present times the tradition
of opening the tourist seasons near the sources was revived.
